In August 2005 I bought Zeta 1.0 from BMT Micro, for $13.00 . I had previously used BeOS 4.5 and BeOS Professional 5.0. Neither of which would run on my Sony VAIO (Celeron 1.7 GHz).

I tried the Haiku alphas, but they aren’t stable enough for essay writing, yet.

Zeta 1.0 is good: it runs smoothly and nicely on my hardware. I had a radeon 9200 problem, but the driver by Thomas Kurschel works very well. Here’s the problem:

The activation server is not running anymore, since yellowTab no longer sells the product.

So I found a solution here. Just do this:

cd /boot/home

SyledEdit fake.c and enter one line of text: int main(){}

save as fake.c

gcc fake.c -o fake

cp fake /boot/beos/bin/activate

According to the original article, it only works on Zeta 1.0.

This is free. It reads and writes the older Office 1997 – 2003 file formats. It works. Did I say it’s free? all your colleagues who have spent loads of money for Office can still read your documents, and if they send you theirs in the older formats, you can read and edit them.

Save your money. Instead, spend what you would have spent on Microsoft Office on better hardware.

At Staples, Best Buy, or Future Shop they’ll try to tell you you need to buy antivirus software: Norton or Trend Micro PC-Cillin or Kaspersky or something. They’ll try to sell it to you with your new computer. You probably don’t need it.

They will tell you that you need Norton etc. because it’s better. And you’re more secure. But the truth is, they need you to buy more stuff at the cash register because they have sales targets to meet, and the more stuff that they can talk you into putting on the cash register tape, the more love the gruntlings get from management. It’s sad. And the line of crap they tell their employees about it is that they are “helping the customer” by offering a “total solution” to the “problem” of computing.

But with that computer that runs a genuine registered version of Microsoft Windows, you have a right to Microsoft’s security software. It’s good, and it’s free to you; you already bought access to it with your licence to runs Windows.

It’s now called Microsoft Security Essentials. They used to call it Microsoft OneCare, and it was for sale as boxed software around the time Windows Vista was being marketed. Was it better when it was for sale? No! The only difference is that retailers were profiting from selling it.

Save your money. Find out about this:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/reviews/microsoft_security_essentials

You can get Microsoft Security Essentials Here.

What’s a good reason for favouring one of the boxed products? I can think of a couple: you routinely scan and repair other peoples’ computers, so you need properly licenced software for business purposes; you are running a server and you need really frequent virus definition updates and the latest malware information immediately; you move a lot of “iffy” bytes across your machine and network (if you’re not sure what I mean by that, go to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and say to yourself, “Andrew called me naive.”)
